Color and story planning!

Color is one of the first things I try to look out for in a film, it gives a sense of past, present, and future of the character or scene. Over the last few days I have been looking at color and the tone/ mood I want to set for my film. the film is comical but also about a high school relationship. To compliment the love aspect i decided warm colors once the protagonist meets her crush, and faded bland colors before. but as for color correction it will be warm and give off almost like a foreign film vibe. But what i cant seem to get down are the colors im assigning to each character. I read and saw a video essay about Edgar Wright (I know i keep bringing him up but he has influenced how i see comedy a lot over the years) and it explained how he assigns colors to his characters. Link to video essay  I felt that the main character should be red, from dark red before the crush and almost a pink after the crush to show passion. The father should be grey to symbolize his gloomy exterior. The mother should be blue to symbolize cold and distance. The crush will be wearing white to show calmness and almost a heavenly presence when in front of the protagonist.

The main subject is a very stereotypical one of love, a girl doesn't know who and if she can be attracted to someone until she meets another young girl who shows her that she can love others just as much as others love her. I wanted to make the main character gay because lately in movies, LGBT+ characters are becoming more popular (call me by your name, and Love Simon) and its nice to give LGBT+ community some screen time and i think it would help people get excited about the movie in the long run, it would show something not everyone has seen before.

The main conflict in the story would be the protagonist doesn't know how to go about her relationship with her new friend, does she flirt? or wait to see if she is gay? I wanted to incorporate some common and relatable struggles of having a crush on the same gender. She also is constantly dealing with her father who despite being a comical character is rather depressed in his job as a chorus teacher. I will continue casting and plot/ dialogue next blog.
